A Closer Look at Snow Blower Parts

!±8± A Closer Look at Snow Blower Parts

You can maximize efficiency, dependability and ease of use with a number of snow blower parts.

Covers

A heavy-duty cover will protect your snow blower when not in use.

Drift Cutters

If you want to create sharp, aesthetically pleasing edges to your snow banks, either buy a snow blower that has a built-in drift cutter or buy a conversion kit. These are also known as drift breakers.

Electric Starters

There are two kinds of starters: Electric and recoil. Electric uses a simple button, while recoil uses a cord that you yank. Some starters use a combination of the two. You can convert recoil starters to electric by getting an electric starter kit. They are available for both two-cycle and four-cycle engines.

Gas, Oil, and Stabilizer

Two-cycle engines are for smaller jobs and use a gas/oil mixture, along with a stabilizer: A liquid that keeps the gas/oil mixture from breaking down over time. Stabilizer also slows long-term build-up of deposits in the carburetor. Four-cycle engines are for bigger jobs, use separate gas and oil feeds and do not require stabilizer, but they do require periodic oil changes.

Headlights

You can buy sealed beam or halogen lights to mount on your snow blower, if it didn't already come with one. This will make it safe to operate before dawn or after sunset.

Shear Pins

Most augers are connected to the auger shaft with shear pins. These pins break off if you hit an impasse while using your snow blower, thus saving the auger gear case from breakdown. If your unit uses shear pins, be sure to keep a few on hand at all times.

Snow Cabs

Protect yourself from sub-zero temperatures and snow flurries with a snow cab. Usually made of heavy-duty vinyl and freeze-resistant polyethylene, snow cabs attach to the handlebars of your dual stage snow blower. They can sometimes be too heavy, upsetting the delicate leveling of the auger blades, so be sure to buy a snow cab that is designed for your specific unit.

Snow Tire Chains

For added traction and maneuverability in icy conditions, you can wrap your tires in special snow chains. They come in various sizes and weave patterns to fit your particular tire.

Other Replacement Parts

Because of the frictional nature of snow blowers, you will need to replace certain parts from time to time. Auger rubbers, drive belts for augers, impellers, wheels and scraper bars are some of the items you might need to replace every two to ten years. Contact a snow blower parts retailer near you in your local yellow pages, or buy parts online. A good place to start is jackssmallengines.com. They stock most snow blower parts, from dual-stage augers and belts, to useful whistles and bells like snow cabs and headlights.

Remember: a good snow blower with a conscientious owner can last up to 30 years or more.

Snow Blower Reviews - A Guide to Understanding the Different Types of Snow Blowers

!±8± Snow Blower Reviews - A Guide to Understanding the Different Types of Snow Blowers

When shopping for a snow blower, it is a wise idea to first check out some snow blowers reviews. Snow blower reviews can be easily found online and you can find both professional reviews and reviews written by people who have purchased a particular model.

First of all, however, it is important to understand a bit about the terminology that is likely to be used in snow blower reviews. A review that cannot be understood is not likely to help you much.

Different types of snow blowers

There are several kinds of snow blowers and snow throwers as follows:

Power shovels (hand-held electric snow throwers) Single stage electric throwers Singe stage gas snow throwers Two stage gas snow blowers Tractor snow blowers (mounted on a regular tractor or lawn tractor).

The kind of machine that will be best for you will depend upon your particular circumstances, i.e. how much snow you get, what kind of snow, how big an area you need to clear and how much you have to spend. Here, I give you a quick rundown of each of the different types of machine that you might consider.

Power Shovels
If the area you live in does not get a whole lot of snow in the winter, then the chances are you only need a power shovel.

Power shovels are light, easy to push, easy to handle and some of these can even shoot snow up to thirty feet away. These machines:
can be used for small areas that do not have a lot of snow. cost around 0 or, sometimes, even less some models also double as a 'power broom' that can be used year round. should be used only on level surfaces. clear snow that is up to 6 to 8 inches deep.

Electric Snow Throwers
These can be used on larger areas; they are useful in moderate or even heavy snowfall. Electric snow throwers are easy to maneuver and operate and are not overly pricey to purchase or maintain.

Electric snow throwers are limited to accessing areas that can be reached with the supplied cable and/or extension cord. The machine should ideally come with a heavy duty power cable, but if it does not, then one can purchase this type of cable separately. Using a residual circuit breaker is strongly recommended.

Electric snow throwers:
are not overly noisy. are ideal for a medium sized yard, driveway or walkway. do not need a lot of maintenance. work best on flat surfaces. can clear snow that is up to ten inches deep.

Gas Snow Blowers and Throwers

There are two different kinds of gas powered snow blowers.

Single stage gas powered machines are smaller and are also known as snow throwers. These blowers use an auger to break down the snow and then throw the snow off to the side.

2 stage gas powered blowers break up the snow which is then drawn into the machine itself via the auger. The snow is later blown by means of an impeller out through the discharge chute. These machines use an authentic blow action and are really the only genuine 'snow blowers'

Gas powered snow blowers are more expensive than their electric counterparts. They are heavy duty pieces of equipment that can handle large amounts of snow. They need more maintenance than electric machines and the cost of gas can add up quite quickly as well.

Single stage snow throwers are ideal for a yard that is not overly large; two stage blowers can be used for large yards and properties.

Two stage blowers can generally handle rough terrain or operate where there is a loose surface, such as gravel, as these types of blowers are made with an auger that does not directly touch the ground. Therefore they are usually sturdier and more durable than single stage snow throwers.

Two stage blowers are useful for breaking up and removing ice. They have large, wide augers and a large throw range.

Many two stage machines come with at least 4 forward speeds; this helps to prevent the snow blower from getting clogged up. While two stage blowers run on gas, they usually come with an electronic start. These blowers may also come with speed controls that can be easily adjusted, two wheel drive that enhances traction and a trigger release that aids in wheel control.

Gas snow blowers come with two stroke or four stroke engines. A single stage snow thrower can clear up to 12 inches of snow. A two stage gas powered model may be able to clear up to nearly two feet of snow.

Tractor Mounted Snow Blowers
These are larger than the average walk behind models and can clear up to five feet of snow. They are usually attached to a tractor or lawn tractor and work in a similar way as the two stage models described above, although they draw power from the tractor.

Tractor mounted machines are made by John Deere and a number of other manufacturers. They are ideal for large areas and remove snow rapidly and efficiently.

Conclusions
When purchasing a snow blower, therefore, consider how large an area will need clearing, how much snow the area gets in the wintertime and what model or make might be affordable for you.

You should then have an idea of which of the types of machines described above is likely to suit you. Thereafter you can carry out your research and study the snow blower reviews that you will find online in a more focused and directed way.

Ventrac Tractor and Snow Blower Make Snow Removal Easier

!±8± Ventrac Tractor and Snow Blower Make Snow Removal Easier

In Deep Snow? Looking for your driveway? We all know that living in an area that is hit heavy with snow can get rough. Winter can throw us the toughest weather and we must find the best way to tackle it. Trying to plow, shovel and push through the snow without a good machine to help can feel like a monumental task, even if it is simply removing snow from the sidewalks. It's a physically demanding job to do by hand and a powerful tractor can help make winter snow clearing a whole lot easier.

There are a multitude of tractors and snow blowers on the market to help clear snow. And deciding on the one for you can be a daunting task. A tractor that really stands out in my mind as the ultimate snow tackling machine is the Ventrac compact tractor with a V-blade and snow blower attachment. Built with commercial grade components, these tractors and attachments are designed to be tough. And tough is what you need when winter comes along. You need a tractor and snow blower that will hold up to the rigors and challenges of winter weather. And I feel that Ventrac is just that tractor.

Several things make this tractor work well for clearing snow. The compact design makes the tractor small enough to fit nicely on sidewalks. No more clearing sidewalks with a shovel! The strong engine power of the Ventrac, as well as the all wheel drive traction, will help you push through mounds of snow you never thought possible. Attach a V-blade and the tractor will quickly clear your sidewalks of snow, saving you many hours of manual labor!

When your driveway is buried in snow, the snow blower attachment mounts on the front of the tractor so you can clearly see where you are going. This snow blower is a two stage system featuring a 220 degree rotational discharge chute designed to easily throw snow up to 40 feet in distance. Hydraulically controlled, it is extremely easy to operate and can be operated from the seat of the tractor for driver comfort. The tractor also has an optional cab for ultimate driver comfort in the nastiest weather...keeping you warm and dry!

I feel Ventrac is a fantastic machine that can make winter life more bearable and easier to handle. With power enough to take on tough work, yet compactly designed to fit tight spaces, it really is a dream to operate. No longer do you need to dread winter snow and wonder how to deal with tough weather conditions. One tractor will get more done and take less of your time doing it.

    Starting a Snow Removal Business

!±8± Starting a Snow Removal Business

Whenever we think of a snow removal business, we usually envision a pickup truck with a snowplow on the front going around plowing parking lots and driveways for businesses. But, what about all the residential areas that need snow removal from their sidewalks and driveways?

I think if I were looking for a business to start, I would take a hard look at starting up a special residential snow removal business. This could also be a great winter business for gardeners and landscapers that are shut down in the winter. This is how I would approach starting a snow removal business:

1.) Develop a small informal business plan where I would write down who I think my customers would be. Then (long before the snow started) I would go and ask some of them if they would be interested in my services when the snow came. Based on my canvassing and customer research I would figure out how big my market could be, and determine if the idea was feasible in my town. This would also be the time to test out some suggested pricing for my services to see what the market would bear.

2.) Keeping with my little business plan, I would investigate the cost of the equipment I would need. I would have to have a good quality professional snow thrower, or at least a prosumer model. I would need to have a small trailer to haul the machine from house to house (not all of them will be side by side), and I would need some miscellaneous accessories, like gas cans, chains, maybe a cab to keep out of the wind, plus a few other supplies. This research and list would tell me how much money I needed to get into the business.

3.) I would then compare my cost of getting into the business against what I calculate I could receive in revenues to see how much money I could make in one season. I wouldn't have to offset the cost of my equipment over just one season, because it would last for several seasons. But I would need to determine my out-of-pocket operating costs for gas and oil and maintenance on the equipment. Of course, I would probably want to base my services on an average number of snowfalls for the season. If there is less snow, I can only hope for a heavier winter next year, Or, if there is more snow than normal, I will have to work overtime to keep up...and collect more money.

4.) I would check with my city offices to see what kind of business license I would need to operate this business, but I would try to avoid getting into too much "formalized" business stuff--I just want to clear some snow from people's driveways...not start the next Microsoft.

5.) When my little business plan indicates that I can make some money and the business looks viable...I will need to determine where I will get my startup money. If I can tap into my savings to buy equipment, I will be ahead of the game. Or, maybe I will need to borrow from family or friends. I may need to look to a third-party investor in my town who would loan me the money. There are also several places on the Internet that I could look for several different forms of small business micro funding. Money is available...sometimes it is just hard to find and takes perseverance.

6.) I would set myself up in business with some business cards, a two-part receipt book so I could present a bill to my customers and record my income, and a small notebook to record my expenses and revenue to keep track of how my business was doing...and to calculate my taxes when the time came. Also, I would do some advertising in local neighborhood shoppers and nickel ad papers. Anything to get the word out that I was in business.

Well, there is the framework for a snow removal business this winter. There may be competition out there, but with superior customer service, someone can make a real business out of snow removal this winter.
